About

Welcome to Loburn Trees, this site is under development so please bear with me, while I knock it into shape.

Loburn Trees is primarily a small nursery at Loburn, Rangiora, New Zealand growing big (tall) trees for the difficult local soils (summer hard, winter waterlogged). The nursery currently has producing fruit trees, deciduous ornamentals and a few ornamental conifers. Lists of tree species and prices, photos etc will come in due course.  Right now we have trees but no sign and no set hours, but we are open to those who are interested in our trees by arrangement.  So in the meantime if you want to view our nursery stock leave a message on (03) 312 8891 with a phone number and we’ll arrange a mutually suitable time.

We also have an ongoing supply of pine firewood available and will be offering tree-pruning services from March 2017

Hi I have just bought a 4 ha block of land in Loburn and am looking at putting in a couple of rows of pine trees. Do you have any please?

      Hi Jo,
Sounds like you’re wanting to get a shelter belt established, I don’t have any stock suitable for that, my focus is individual large trees for landscaping purposes to get that established feel early on. Trees like birch, tulip poplar, dawn redwood, fastigate oak, silver maple
Bulk bare-rooted pine trees can be bought from Rangiora Nursery out near South Eyre Rd https://www.rangioranursery.co.nz/ they will be the cheapest, they used to also have cypresses and leylands if you wanted something different.
Unless you’re planning to hedge these trees, I’d recommend you consider other options such as Eucalypts, cypresses, Leyland cypress, deodar cedar or mixed deciduous.
Radiata are commonly planted because they are cheap, grow fast and are low maintenance but they quickly become a problem casting heavy shade and suffering damage in wind and snow. Poplars have the same attributes but like radiata will quickly outgrow a 4ha block becoming a liability, except maybe ‘crows nest’ (unless you and your neighbours are only growing grass).
Eucalyptus nitens is a proven Eucalypt on our clay soils but suffers from the same issue of getting too big
Cypresses are slower but cope well with the soil and don’t get too tall I’d recommend Cupressus lusitanica
Leyland cypresses are fast growing and don’t get too tall but they do need side trimming of the lower branches, I’d recommend Ferndown or SuperL but avoid Leighton’s Green it is very prone to canker.
Oven’s cypress is similar to the Leylands but seems less prone to growing heavy branches. All the good cypresses can be bought from Southern Cypress Nursery in Ohoka http://www.cypress.co.nz/our-nursery/
Deodar cedar are relatively slow growing and were often planted in mixture with radiata in Canterbury, when the radiata get to a size or age where they are becoming a problem and should be removed there is an instant long term shelter belt already in place. You can get low cost deodar and other less common trees from Appleton’s Nursery in Wakefield https://www.appletons.co.nz/
For deciduous shelter that’s not so tall, our native lowland ribbonwood, birch, ash, italian and red alder, fastigate oak, red, silver and sugar maples. Trees that might be a bit too spreading but do well on the clay soil include pin, red and scarlet oaks, european beech e.g. copper beech and lime trees(Linden).
      Regards
      Graeme
